Another woman whose different-ness spoke to me as a child. It’s not something one can put into words, at such a young age, it just is.
Watching her films, comedy specials, hair, and skin. I took it all in as oddly beautiful and unique, a word I’d learn and appreciate much later. She helped define my own sense of what beauty really is, just by being herself — to include the way she spoke, and the people she spent time with, saying, we don’t all have to match to get along.
As a kid, who felt anything but normal, I was glad to see her, hear her off beat, dry sense of humor that matched my own. I felt a kindship that went beyond our skin and gender.
Happy Womens History Month. Please help me to celebrate, activist, icon, comedienne Whoopi Goldberg.
