My mom,

What do I say about the woman for without, I would not be? No words seem adequate.

The woman in the photo, young, beginning life, as it was and already having lived through so much. She made room for me in her heart. I imaged that it was crowded in there, but it wasn’t. I fit easily, into that space, a space exclusively for me.

So, who am I to speak of love? A novice, at life comparatively, but aren’t we all? That place that her love for me lived, hasn’t been activated in me. Or has it? I wonder. The intensity of her love is still felt today. Her memory lives in the hearts and minds of the people who knew her best. A gift, her gift to me was that of a love that covered both of us, where when people see me, they see her.

Happy Womens History Month. Help me celebrate my mom, Sarah (Mac) Hernandez.
