Poetry + Gratitude
I’ve come
to the decision
that Life is — not measured
in seconds
or minutes
or hours
or days.
Life is instead measured
by how hard
we love
the souls that
touch us.
Life is measured
by — how many
good shoes we ruin
on the dance floor.
so dance, my friends

Author’s Note:
I found this poem in a notebook that I used for, well, everything. To jot down a number, or an address, the arrant brilliant phrase floating into my mind. Reduced to loose sheets filled with my scribblings, worn by constant handling, it seemed to wait patiently, there for me to rediscover and give life.
I wrote this poem during Kevin Powell’s Writing Workshop Women’s History Zoom party, during the height of the pandemic. The DJ was fire!
